There are some things around your house that can wait to be fixed, but the foundation of your home just isn't one of those things. If you leave a foundation problem alone, it won't get better on its own.
The foundation of your home can be considered a single structure since all four wall footings are secure in ground and tightly connected together. The design of a foundation and the materials used to build it, enable a typical foundation to outlast the building it supports. However, problems with soil and moisture can sometimes exert unexpected loads on a foundation that lead to damage and deterioration.
Looking at the pictures on the TV news that show homes which have been flooded out can't help but make you wonder where you would start if something like that happened to you. Driving through entire neighborhoods in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in the aftermath of the floods of 2008 made it infinitely clear that flood damage is devastating. Even if you don't live in a flood plain, there are other reasons why there can be water damage in your basement.
